8:30am-12:00pm
Assisting in the Montessori Classroom
A great workshop for new and experienced assistants is
designed to revisit and train regarding daily responsibilities, preparation of
the environment, expectations for adult behavior and interactions with students
and parents. Josh will also present information about different areas of the
Montessori classroom. This workshop is a fantastic way to open lines of great
communication between teachers and assistants!
Maria Montessori patterned the sequence of the math curriculum after the natural path humans took in discovering math principles. This workshop is for anyone who loves math and wants to learn more about the elementary math program and its connection to the pre-school math materials. Through manipulation of the concrete Montessori materials, the elementary student takes the foundation he/she learned in the primary classroom and builds sensory impressions which leads to seeing patterns and relationship, thus developing further– the Mathematical Mind.
1:00pm—4:00pm
Art and Music History for the Montessori Classroom
Learn
to use stories, songs and projects to expose students to all of the joys that
art appreciation has to offer. From Impressionism to Pop Art, each unit focuses
on one movement and the artist most influential to the movement. The second
part of the workshop focuses on Music History, spanning four eras of classical
music from Baroque to Nationalistic, focusing on one key composer within each
era. Both Art and Music History offer hands-on crafts, and easy to prepare
coloring and book making activities. You will learn new ways to impart the joys
of art and music with your students!
Observation,
the Heart of Education
Presenter:
Peter Larrow
Observation
is the ability to perceive the unfathomable potential of the child; but, this
potential is difficult to perceive because it is masked by the child’s
inability to function in an environment full of obstacles. The presentation
will guide the participants through ways to remove obstacles and to
“follow the child” through use of scientific observation. The goal
is that that when you leave the presentation, you will be energized and
determined to make daily observation the heart of education in the classroom.
Friday, October 3rd Conference Schedule
8:30am-12:00pm
The
Montessori math materials are designed to put pictures in students’ minds
and to help them see and discover patterns and relationships. The Elementary
math curriculum offers numerous opportunities for your students to discover the
simplicity and beauty of mathematics. Your students also can share this joy by
becoming math discoverers through the use of the Montessori materials. The
participants will explore ways to support the students in constructing their own
learning by discovering the rules and algorithms involved in working with
numbers and in expressing how they solve problems. Preschool teachers are
welcome too!
Primary Grammar
If you are at all intimidated by implementing the Grammar Material into your 3-6
classrooms, then this is the workshop for you. Josh will show you how to make and use
his own “Primary Grammar Cabinet” to effectively and easily teach
nouns, articles, adjectives and verbs to your students. This workshop will get
even the youngest of three year olds in on the “function of words”
fun!
1:00pm—4:00pm
Does this sound like a question you have received from parents at
your school? Dr. Montessori stated,
“The exercises of practical life are formative activities, a work of
adaptation to the environment. Such adaptation to the environment and efficient
functioning therein is the very essence of a useful education.” This
interactive presentation will look in depth at the aims and lessons of the practical life area at both the
early childhood and elementary level, allowing a deeper understanding of the
importance of
practical life activities in the child’s future academic success.
The Essence
of Montessori – The Montessori Triad Presenter: Rosann Larrow
In the Montessori Triad, Dr. Montessori captures the three important elements of the Montessori Philosophy . . . the Child, the Environment and the Adult. In this interactive discussion, participants will look at the Learner full of Potential, the Purposeful Prepared Environment and the Observant Adult to discern characteristics, research, roles and ways to implement the Montessori Method to support the developing child.
